Why TV Blows

fart-peacockI never really liked Jay Leno. I never thought he was funny, and I thought his show kind of sucked. But one thing I always enjoyed was Jaywalking – the skit where he walks around the streets and interviews real idiots and asks them extremely easy general knowledge questions.

Granted, this skit wasn’t invented by Leno or the Tonight Show, and it involved no talent on Leno’s part. But he did make it famous, and it was funny. Tuesday night was the first time I watched his new show, which is basically his old show without a desk. He did a skit called “Battle of the Jaywalk All-Stars,” where the dumbest of the dumb compete in a Jeopardy-like trivia contest. But this time, it was different. The contestants were members of the “reality show” The Real Housewives of Orange County.

I’ve never seen that show, but I’m sure it sucks. And so did this skit. It was scripted, and the women couldn’t even act well enough to make it slightly believable. It wasn’t the least bit funny. They successfully slaughtered one of two things Leno ever did that were funny, the other being Headlines – not coincidentally another thing that has nothing to do with the talent of Leno or his writers.

So the natural reaction is, why ruin it? Well, it doesn’t take long to figure out why. The Real Housewives of Orange County is aired on Bravo TV. NBC runs Leno’s show and owns Bravo TV. This should bother you.

That entire shitty skit was a promotion, as well as an insult to your intelligence, because it’s disguised as a legitimate skit. And it’s not even like a guest coming on the show to promote a movie, this is far worse. It’s NBC shamelessly promoting its own shitty show by making another one of its shitty shows even shittier. They’re willing to make one show worse just so you watch a different one.

The way they see it, there’s no obligation to the quality of the product. They don’t care how good the shows are as long as people are watching them. As long as you’re tuning into the worst pile of shit on TV, they won’t bother making it actually worth watching.

Is it any wonder why 99 percent of TV sucks ass? Media conglomerates are going to ruin everything.
